I headed into my room and closed the door behind me. Was my neighbor home? I wasn’t sure. I wasn’t worried about the potential serial killer next to me right now.

The events of the night had kind of overshadowed everything else, but now, realization dawned upon me: Jerod was in the wind. I had no more leads. Robert had nothing to do with him, and the man who had shot Jake was still out there. Somewhere.

Frustration welled up within me as tears stung behind my eyes. I was here to take care of Jake. To do for him what he had done for me so many times: make him feel safe again.

And I’d completely failed. I’d been here for two days now, and I was no closer to Jerod than when I’d landed. In fact, I was even further away, because I’d eliminated the one lead I’d had.

I had absolutely nothing.

Glancing at the clock on my phone, I saw it was just about four thirty in the morning. I was tired but still running on adrenaline. There was no point in trying to go to bed right now. I needed to find Jerod.

I sent Dot a text.

When you get this, call me. Jerod wasn’t at the farm. Robert Chisholm had nothing to do with him.

I pulled out my iPad and started searching for Jerod Nash’s name again, as if I were starting this investigation over from scratch. I’d just opened his Facebook profile when my phone began to ring. It was Dot.

“Morning,” I said, putting her on speaker.

“I’m guessing it didn’t go well tonight, then?” she asked.

“No. It turns out Robert was acting all secretive because he was running a grow-op in the shed at the back of his farm.”

“Ah.”

“And Detective Hollinger was in on it. It really does explain everything, including his suspicious actions. He wasn’t being weird about catching someone who shot a cop, because he didn’t know that’s who we were after. He was just trying to keep us away from the weed.”

“And you’re sure Robert wasn’t hiding Jerod?”

“Yeah. He said he hasn’t spoken to Jerod since high school. Hasn’t even logged into Facebook in months. To be honest, I believe him. He was just trying to hide his side project.”

“Which means we’re back to square one,” Dot muttered.

“Exactly. I’m looking up Jerod’s social media again. Maybe we missed someone.”

“I know we didn’t,” Dot said. “But he has to be somewhere on this island, linked to someone that he knows. If it were you, who would you go to?”

“Rosie,” Dot and I both answered in unison.

“Okay, assume he doesn’t have access to his own Rosie. Then who?” Dot asked.

“Well, there’s you. And Zoe. And my mom.”

“Right. Two of three people that you’re not related to. But we’ve checked out most of Jerod’s friends.”

“What about his friends’ parents?” I asked, an idea coming to me. “After all, Jerod is about my age. He won’t own property himself, and his friends wouldn’t, either, but what about their parents? They’re
